The Film Export Group (FEG), representing a range of stakeholders, bodies and organisations including the British Council, UK Trade & Investment, Film Export UK, UK Screen Association, and the UK Film Council, has been working across the film sector since 2002 to coordinate strategic action for film export activity.

Jonathan Olsberg was a keynote speaker at the 2010 SPAA annual conference, where the key findings contained in SPI's forthcoming report on building sustainable film businesses were discussed. The session addressed strategies for creating successful, international film businesses in a rapidly changing digital world.

Olsberg•SPI carried out a research and analysis study into two important programmes which Northern Film and Media ran in recent years: The Network Television Investment Fund and the subsequent Content Fund Extension.

As part of the Nordic Film Prize 2010, Jonathan Olsberg on behalf of AGICOA, a not for profit membership organisation that collects retransmission royalties, delivered and moderated a session on how producers/rights holders could build sustainable content businesses.

Film Location Finland is a two-year EU-funded project carried out by the POEM Foundation designed to market and maximise Finland as a shooting location for screen product.

The theme of this year's Screen International’s Annual Film Summit was "Building sustainable film businesses fit for new commercial realities".

In July 2010, Olsberg•SPI was commissioned by Screen West Midlands to conduct high-level market research and intelligence to capture and analyse Screen West Midlands' funded clients, networks, and stakeholders’ perceptions of the quality of its services, and more generally, its overall offer.

In early 2010, SPI was commissioned by UK Film Council to produce a report that would assist the UK Film Council Board in its deliberations on a possible new paradigm for building UK-based film companies of scale (where film production is a major element of the business model).

SPI was hired by the UK Film Council in 2008 as the monitoring and evaluation partner of its £3 million Digital Film Archive Fund, The DFAF fund represents a stream of National Lottery funding, operated by the UK Film Council. The fund has been delegated by the UKFC to the 9 Regional Screen Agencies to enable them to fund projects that enhance public access to UK’s screen heritage. This work is ongoing

SPI wrote a much-discussed report for UK producers’ body PACT, spelling out ways that independent producers could build sustainable businesses. The proposals suggest a future in which producers can use public funds in a more entrepreneurial way, with greater control of their own IP and the potential to reinvest revenues from successful films in creating growth.

First Light administers a talent development scheme for young BME audiences, entitled “Second Light”. The scheme is aimed at supporting and providing training opportunities to 30 young people from BME backgrounds, to enable them to pursue successful careers in the film industry. SPI was commissioned in late 2009 to conduct an evaluation of the scheme.
