SPI's Economic Impact Study on Spain’s Incentive for International Film and Television Production Referenced in Leading Publications
Olsberg•SPI (SPI)’s recent study on the Economic Impact of Spain’s Rebates for Investments in International Film and Television Series has been covered by a number of leading trade publications.
The report, commissioned by the Spain Film Commission in collaboration with PROFILM, and launched at the 2024 San Sebastián International Film Festival, has been covered by industry-leading outlets such as Deadline, Variety, Screen Daily, and Kinótico.
The study highlights the significant economic benefits of Spain’s international film and television productions between 2019 and 2022. The study shows that, in the years analysed, for every euro invested through the programme, the benefit to the Spanish economy was nine euros in additional GVA, from direct, indirect, and induced effects. In addition, SPI estimates that incentivised international film and television productions supported an average of 7,080 FTE jobs across Spain’s wider economy, with a substantial portion of the spending benefiting non-audiovisual sectors.
This analysis underscores the value of Spain’s international incentive scheme and its ability to attract high-profile productions such as Asteroid City (2023) and The Crown (2016-2023). As competition for production locations intensifies globally, the findings solidify Spain’s status as a prime destination for international filming.
