SPI to Undertake Study into the Arctic Indigenous Audiovisual Sector in Canada

SPI has been commissioned by the International Sámi Film Institute (ISFI), on behalf of the Artic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF), to undertake an exciting new study into the Arctic indigenous audiovisual industry in Canada. Supported by Telefilm Canada, this study will gather new data and insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

Environmental sustainability and ecologically responsible filmmaking practices are central objectives for the AIFF. Therefore, this study will pay particular attention to the environmental changes underway in the region, and the impact this is having on Arctic indigenous communities – and what opportunities there may be for Arctic audiovisual creators.

The study will be primarily focused on indigenous communities in Canada, but will also draw references and comparisons with the Sápmi region, and the findings from SPI’s initial study into the Sámi audiovisual sector for the ISFI. Specifically, the study will involve gathering insight through consultations, surveys, desk research and data analysis, to provide recommendations to support the Artic audiovisual industry in Canada. The study will also outline strategic recommendations to the AIFF in relation to future opportunities and approaches that might be employed to grow the Artic Canadian audiovisual industry further.
